While some of the news coverage [on illegal immigration] has abated, Smith said, the problem has not - and in some ways it's getting worse.

 

"This is not the same illegal immigration we had 10 years ago," he said. It has a more prominent criminal element and lack of federal action has created what Smith called "a real crisis of confidence in government."
